February- Hello

I guess the world keep spinning and time keeps moving, even when I'm busy. I guess that this Virginia version of Winter (30-50 degree days, with the odd 60s day or 20s day thrown in just to confuse us) might be coming to a middle. I guess its been a while since I've taken stock of the world and my place in it. I've just been living life you see.

This winter has been special. I was able to quit the Melting Pot in early December and was amazed (and extremely grateful) to be offered an outreach job with Central Virginia Legal Aid Society a few weeks later. Especially grateful that the job wouldn't need to start until early January. And so when winter officially arrived on December 21st, I celebrated by throwing a Christmas/White Elephant gift exchange, buying a car, and then flying to British Columbia for a week of family fun,

8 days filled with family (sibling, parents, grandparents, sibling-in-law to be, cousins, aunts and uncles, etc), cookies and too much good food. With mountains and walks and long political talks. with re-connecting and renewal. With celebrating hope and love.

And then the New Year. A week at home of training, of hectically trying to insure my car. Of enjoying sleeping in. And then full time outreach work. Most days my job is great. I love knowing important, complicated things and then teaching others about them. That, in essence, is the root of my work: understanding health insurance and the Affordable Care Act, and then working to share what I learn with others. It is beautiful. It is fun. It is also challenging and frustrating and sometimes hopeless. But there are always good things. And the people I work with are fabulous. But it is always hard to know how effective one is being, especially when almost noone shows up for one's events. Work has also been stuck in my head, and it's a challenge to pry it loose. Brainstorming outreach could be all I do.

But slowly I've stolen my free time back. Thanks to Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle and Matt's cuddles and the less and less occasional glass of red wine. Mid January also included a trip to the Valley and a wonderful visit with soul friends. And the acquisition of Sparta, a furry little hamster friend. Plus I made sure to budget in a message with Nadia. And continue to play games with my friends every few weeks.

The only thing lacking from my very busy winter is exercise - and as its winter I am not horribly down on myself about that. But I do miss yoga and swimming and walking 6 miles every week. Maybe I'll learn to fit those things back into my life. But yesterday I made a delicious pie - so all is still right with the world.
